Xlvi. the Oxytocic Hormone of the Posterior Lobe of the Pituitary Gland

چکیده
IN Part V [Gulland and Randall, 1935] it was shown that the molecule of the oxytocic hormone certainly contains one, and may possibly contain two, oxidation-reduction systems, although the existence of the second is not definitely established. The present communication describes the actions on the hormone of some oxidising and reducing agents, which were studied in the hope that they might throw light on the nature of the groups forming the oxidation-reduction system, or systems. EXPERIMENTAL. Sulphur dioxide and sodium sulphite (Fig. 1). Sodium sulphite at PH 8-4 caused irreversible and complete inactivation of the hormone in 5 minutes. Sulphur dioxide at PH 3 5, on the other hand, caused a slower inactivation to about 60 %, which was followed by reactivation and finally by inactivation to 3-6 % after 24 hours.

Some Effects of Posterior Pituitary on Water Metabolism *
Sch'afer and Oliver3", the first to demonstrate the physiological activity of the pituitary gland, recorded observations of its effects upon the circulation in 1894, shortly after their discovery of the adrenal hormone. The first influence upon water metabolism to be discovered was diuresis (Magnus and Schafer, 190120). It was not until 191 0, however, that the pituitary gland was related to di...
متن کاملThe isolation of neurophysin-I and-II from bovine pituitary neurosecretory granules separated on a large scale from other subcellular organelles. Demonstration of slow equilibration of neurosecretory granules during centrifugation in a sucrose density gradient.
1. An improved procedure for the isolation of neurosecretory granules from the posterior lobe of the bovine pituitary gland is described. 2. Of the total oxytocic and pressor activities present in the original tissue 80% was sedimentable. 3. The granules were separated from mitochondria by prolonged centrifugation in a sucrose density gradient. During a sedimentation period of 5hr. the granules...
متن کاملPreparation of high potency oxytocic material by the use of counter-current distribution.
The active principles of the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland have been separated and concentrated in several different laboratories by a variety of procedures. In a recent review (1) the details of many of these procedures and the potencies of the products obtained have been compared. Among the methods used for separating and concentrating the oxytocic and pressor factors, differential pr...

By the end of this section, you will be able to: • Explain the interrelationships of the anatomy and functions of the hypothalamus and the posterior and anterior lobes of the pituitary gland • Identify the two hormones released from the posterior pituitary, their target cells, and their principal actions • Identify the six hormones produced by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland, their tar...
